A British charity is looking for recruits to count penguins in Antarctica

UKAHT has launched its latest five-month opening for some of the world’s most remote jobs at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island, Antarctica, located some 9,000 miles from the UK.

The charity is looking for new recruits to sponsor the building on the site which will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year and is home to the world’s southernmost post office.

What jobs are available?

Taking care of the main site, running the post office and gift shop, maintaining the artifacts in the museum at Bransfield House, and running the daily counts for the protection of the colony of gentoo penguins will all be tasks for the team.

Ms Nicol said: “We are excited to offer an opportunity like no other, to live in a landscape that leaves you feeling awe and pure amazement and to work in Port Lockroy – the birthplace of the British Antarctic Survey – where pioneering generations went before we made groundbreaking discoveries about our world.

“Last year we received a record number of applications for just four roles based on Goodyear Island, so these positions are very popular.

“It is also a really exciting season to work for Port Lockroy as we will be celebrating their 80th anniversary.

In 1944, Operation Tabarin – a secret mission in World War II – established Port Lockroy as the first British base in Antarctica and marked the beginning of British scientific research on the continent.

“Our contributions to Antarctic climate research, cartography and geology can be traced back to that moment, and this year’s team will bring this rich history to life for visitors from around the world.”

How to apply for jobs in Antarctica

If you wish to apply for the role you will need to do this before the closing date of Sunday 26th March unless you are applying for a Conservation Carpenter role as the closing date for this is Wednesday 12th April.

Interviews will take place online and those shortlisted will be invited to attend a two day selection event in Northamptonshire.

Successful applicants will then undertake training in Cambridgeshire.

Those awarded the roles will live and work in Port Lockroy from November until March 2024.

Conservation Carpenters will arrive on site in January 2024 for a period of six to eight weeks.
