Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’ wife, struggles to cry as she commemorates the 68th birthday of the actor with dementia
Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Hemming, broke down in tears as she celebrated her dementia-stricken husband’s 68th birthday with a touching video posted online.
The 44-year-old model shared her devastation in February over her partner, actor Die Hard’s health problems, in a joint statement with the rest of his family, and on Sunday released a revealing clip of her grief as he approaches 70.
She said, “Today is my husband’s birthday. I started the morning crying. As you can see by my swollen eyes and the nosebleed of my nose, I think it’s important that you see all sides of this.”
“I always get this message or people always say to me like, ‘You’re so strong, I don’t know how you do it.'” I don’t have a choice. I wish I did. But I’m also raising two kids on this one.
“So sometimes in our lives we have to get in our big girl pants and get to it. And that’s what I do. But I have times of sadness every day. Sadness every day. And I really feel it today on his birthday.”
In another video, she added how she was putting together a reel of clips for Bruce: “So I worked on this reel that I’m posting for my husband’s birthday. I don’t know why I’d do that because the videos are like a knife in my heart.”
“But as much as I do it for myself I do it for you. Because I know how much you love my husband and — don’t cry Emma — but it means a lot to me, thank you.”
Bruce quit acting last year after being diagnosed with a speech impairment, and his family said in February that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
A joint statement from ex-wife Demi Moore, Emma and his five children – two of whom are with the model – said: “Our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we’ve all received since sharing Bruce’s original diagnosis.
“With that in mind, we wanted to give you an update on our beloved husband, father and friend as we now have a deeper understanding of what he is going through.
“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in the spring of 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (commonly known as FTD).
Unfortunately, communication challenges are only one symptom of the disease Bruce is facing.
“Although it’s painful, it’s a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”
The statement was signed by Emma, Demi, 60, and Bruce, Rumer, 34, Scout, 31, Tallulah, 29 — which Bruce has been with Demi — and his daughters Mabel, 10, and Evelyn, 8, who he has with Emma.
The actor’s rare condition — which makes up less than five percent of all dementia cases — affects the lobes of the brain behind the forehead, which deal with behaviour, problem-solving, planning and emotions.
Symptoms can include personality changes, such as appearing rude, uncaring, and unsympathetic, along with repetitive compulsive movements, hoarding, and obsessions, as well as a desire to eat unhealthy food.
