The European Parliament has claimed that the European Parliament’s vote on digital identifiers at the block level is the latest step towards a “China Europe”.
Christian Terhes, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Christian Democratic Peasants’ Party, described the EU’s latest push for cross-border digital ID cards as another step towards the “Sinicization” of the bloc.
Despite bureaucrats in Brussels insisting that the measure is in the best interests of ordinary citizens, Parliament’s vote to see digital identities approved appears to be one of the latest attempts by EU institutions to strip power away from member states’ national governments.
according to a report By Euractiv, the bloc’s parliament on Thursday approved a vote to hold negotiations on a European digital identity (eID) framework going forward – although the publication describes the process as a mere formality.
Romana Jerkovic, the parliament’s rapporteur for the digital identity programme, announced her approval of the plans, claiming that they would enable individual EU citizens to have “total control over their private data” while accessing facilities across the bloc.
Such a claim has been strongly objected by Terhess, who instead sees the measure as a serious erosion of the rights of those living within the EU.
“Usually our liberties and freedoms are lost to the big country incrementally, but passing on an eID wallet is a big step towards China in Europe,” the parliamentarian told Breitbart Europe, repeatedly warning that the measure could give authorities China-like censorship of people’s private lives.
“This digital wallet will allow the European Union and national authorities (such as the Chinese Communist Party) to have technical tools so that they can see what people are doing and establish control,” Terhes said.
He claimed that “something similar to the Chinese-style social credit system is now available in the European Union, because this eID wallet is a necessary technology for its implementation.”

The Romanian politician went on to compare the upcoming digital identity measure with the block system of block-level COVID certificates, which have been used to prevent people who have not been vaccinated, have recently recovered from coronavirus or received a negative test for the disease from traveling to different countries.
“We already had a bad experience with the EU’s Covid digital certificate, which was advertised as a ‘facilitation’ of free movement, but in reality was used to restrict and control the movement of people if their status or behavior was not to the satisfaction of the state authorities,” he explained.
At the height of the bloc’s lockdown hysteria, such controls were not enough for many in Brussels, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at one point pushed the union to adopt a block-wide forced vaccination mandate that would require people to be exposed to the disease. .
“How we can encourage and possibly consider compulsory vaccination within the EU, that needs to be discussed,” the commission chief said in late 2021, adding that she wanted a “common approach” to the issue across the bloc.
The procedure would probably be similar to that laid down in law by Austria, for example – although the German-speaking nation’s attempts to actually implement the policy ultimately failed miserably.
