Forty teams compete in the annual South Cambs School Sports Partnership 5/6 Quicksticks Hockey competition.

Last week’s event, held at the University Athletic Ground on Wilberforce Road, was divided into ‘big schools’ and ‘small schools’ tournaments based on student numbers.

In the morning, 20 teams from 11 senior schools appeared in cup and plate formats with 10-minute matches and a four-man side made up of two boys and two girls.

In a repeat of last year’s cup final, Histon Brook took on Cambridge University Primary School to a 2-1 victory, while Pendragon in the final secured a 3-0 victory at Trumpington Park.

Meanwhile, the Junior Schools Cup Final was contested between Harston, Newton and Mildreth, both of whom won all of their group matches.

It was Harston and Newton who rose to the top thanks to a 2-1 victory.

But perhaps the standout performer of the day was Barton, who qualified for the plate final by winning all four of his group matches, scoring 23 goals in the process.

They met Great Abington in the final after taking the lead on a coin toss having tied on points and goal difference with Harston and Newton II, with Barton kicking six more unanswered goals to secure the top prize.
